Vehicle Description
1972 Lancia Fulvia Coupe S2 1.3S (#030179)
Lancia Automobiles S.p.A. was founded in 1906 in Turin Italy by Fiat racing driver Vincenzo Lancia. Lancia was known for their innovations and craftmanship.
The Lancia Fulvia was named after the Roman road “Fulvia” leading to Turin. The Lancia Fulvia Coupe was launched in 1965 and designed by Piero Castagnero. The design was inspired by the Italian Riva motorboats, with clean body lines, thin pillars and large windows, a clean-cut tail, and a one-piece mahogany wood dashboard.
The Lancia Fulvia Coupe was an instant sensation in rally motorsports, winning the Italian Rally Championship in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1972. In 1972, the iconic Fulvia Coupe won the Monte Carlo rally and the International Championship for Manufacturers (the forerunner to the World Rally Championship).
This particular example is a 1972 Series 2 1.3S model (“S” for sport).
The S2 Fulvia is powered by a 1.3 litre (1,298 cc) V4 engine producing around 90hp in a car weighing just under 2,000 pounds.
Lancia pioneered the V4 which is an engineering marvel. The V4 has a remarkably narrow 12-degree cylinder bank angle, allowing for a single cylinder head. The engine itself, which is longitudinal and fed by twin Solex carburetors, is canted to the side at a 45-degree angle to lower the center of gravity and preserve a low hood line. The engine is a true DOHC design, with one camshaft operating intake valves with a separate camshaft for the exhaust valves, both driven by a chain. The engine also features hemispherical combustion chambers to maximize efficiency and power in the small package.
The engine is in ahead of the front axle to optimize weight distribution of the front-wheel-drive platform. The handling is neutral and the steering turn-in and feel are sublime, making placement on the road easy and predictable.
For the S2, the gearbox was updated to a 5 speed, with a dogleg configuration, first gear being down and to the left, a common approach with racing cars of the period. Also, for the S2, the 4-wheel disc brakes were upgraded to Girling, replacing the earlier Dunlop variant.
This Lancia 1.3 S2 is in its original color (Grigio Argento) with black interior.
The car resided near Milan, Italy with its two prior owners before being imported to the States in 2023. When in Italy, it was treated to a professional repaint in its original color. The interior is mostly all original and in remarkable condition, a testament to how well this car was cared for and loved in its home country.
Highlights of the original interior include a wood steering wheel, single piece mahogany dashboard, and flying buttress seats which are both elegant and comfortable. The open greenhouse is another highlight when piloting this little rally gem.
During the reconditioning, this car was fitted with Cromodora magnesium allow wheels (14x6) and then de-bumpered with correct marker lights added, to reflect the rally spec Monte Carlo special edition of the car offered in 1972 to commemorate victory at the Monte Carlo Rally in that year.
The car has also been fitted with exact reproduction registration plates which the car has worn since its first registration (MI-P7 5317), with “MI” representing Milan. The car also has its original keys (ignition, glove box and fuel filler door) and the original maintenance book (in Italian of course).
In advance of sale, an oil/filter change has been performed as well as an overall systems check. The Fulvia also comes with a custom indoor car cover with Italian flag stripes.
This Fulvia S2 has a clear Maryland title. All import duties and EPA exemptions were taken care of, so the car is ready to register and drive.
This Fulvia 1.3 S2 is waiting for its new owner to enjoy the open road and “la dolce vita.”
